Thoracic Surgery Services, including robotic assisted procedures

Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery
• There is a new type of minimally invasive surgery that uses the most advanced
technology available for complex surgical procedures. Many patients are candidates
for this effective alternative to both open surgery and traditional thoracoscopy.
• Surgery is performed through several small incisions. The system permits our
surgeon to view structures in the chest through a high-definition 3D camera.
Dramatically increased dexterity of the miniaturized da Vinci instruments allows more
precise technique with less tissue trauma. This results in faster recovery and shorter
   hospitalization.
• da Vinciฎ Robotic Procedures include
   • Lobectomy with anatomic mediastinal dissection,
   • Pulmonary segmentectomy,
   • Esophageal tumor resection
   • Treatment of esophageal disorders including anti-reflux procedures
• The da Vinci Surgical System
• Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) is used for the diagnosis and treatment of
lung and pleural disease. VATS is performed using small incisions and offers
advantages that include shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times.
Advanced Thoracoscopic and Traditional (Open) Thoracic Surgery
• Your body produces pleural fluid in small amounts to lubricate the surfaces of the
pleura, the thin tissue that lines the chest cavity and surrounds the lungs. A pleural
effusion is an abnormal, excessive collection of this fluid.
• Treatment aims to remove the fluid, prevent fluid from building up again and treating
the cause of the fluid buildup.
• Mediastinoscopy is a surgical procedure used to examine the inside of the
upper chest between and in front of the lungs (mediastinum).
